What Products Are Available To Quit Smoking

by Dr Rosen on September 26, 2009

It is certainly not easy to quit smoking. Due to its highly addictive power, nicotine can gain a significant grip on the nervous system. While some have been able to quit “cold turkey,” others have found such a strategy to be elusive to say the least. Thankfully, the past decade has seen the release of scores of excellent smoking cessation products. These products have successfully helped scores of people break free of their addictions. Here is a look at the more popular (and helpful) ones:

Nicoderm CQ: This was one of the very first transdermal products released to the public. The way it works is simple: an adhesive patch containing nicotine is applied to the skin. Slowly, over a period of several hours, the nicotine will absorb into the bloodstream. This will help eliminate the craving for nicotine and, hence, the need to smoke a cigarette. As the old commercial used to say, it is not the nicotine that harms you. It is the smoke. Once you have replaced cigarettes with Nicoderm CQ as the nicotine delivery system, you will find is easier to break the cigarette smoking habit.

Nicorette Gum: This product works the same as Nicoderm with the obvious difference is that nicotine is delivered through chewing gum as opposed to cigarettes. (The gum comes in various flavors which mask the nicotine taste) The process of replacing the cigarette with a different delivery system is effective and smokers may find it easier to switch to gum than a patch.

Cigarrest: This is a gum like product similar to Nicorette. However, Cigarrest does not include any nicotine in it. Since some people would prefer to stay as far away from nicotine as possible when quitting, this placebo inducing product is popular with them.

Zyban: This was among the first prescription medication designed to help people quit smoking. There are others such as Chantrix, but this is the most commonly prescribed. Why is it the most commonly prescribed? Because it works and that is what counts the most when looking for a stop smoking aid.
